“A beautifully told story.” Kes review

Kes at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh.

Review by Rhianne Miller, who is working on a week-long placement at our Learning Department.

A beautifully told story unravels from a wonderful cast, capturing the hearts of many. The two man show gives an insight on fifteen year old Billy Casper’s life, and about his best and only friend, his Kestrel. As an older Billy, (Sean Murray) delves into and acts out the characters of Billy’s life, we see how Billy (James Anthony Pearson) always gets the blame. His mother’s a mess, his brother’s a bully and the only time he can get away from it all is when he’s flying Kes. Billy’s happiness has blossomed, until one night, after a fight with his brother Jud over a betting paper, his life is crushed by Jud’s bullying ways. From the mass of ‘car boot sale` set, to the spectacular choreography, Kes grasps the audience, and overall is a great performance with creative video, lighting and music to top it all off.

Kes runs at the Traverse until Wednesday 2 November.
